  AHIMSA 2018

  1. Kannan (who played the role of Mahatma Gandhi) & Latha (the brains behind the show)I am sure you will need a few months to recover from this extraordinary and brilliant production! I cannot imagine the amount of energy, thought and time you have devoted to this event. It was simply amazing! The kids looked so wonderful in their costumes and the dances were thoughtfully choreographed. The music, sound, lighting, effects and the organization on stage was simply surreal. Hats off to you, Sumitran, Chris and all the others who helped for their flawless execution!  I want to thank you for giving me this opportunity Rani and encouraging me to participate. You will not believe the emotions I have gone through in the last week as I was preparing this speech – watching the Ben Kingsley movie again and watching the countless documentaries and videos of Gandhiji took me to a different world altogether.  He has always been my hero since childhood. I can’t help thinking that being born in the same month as him may have had something to do with it! Being given a chance to be like him, even if only on stage, is a feeling of a lifetime. Whether my exposition of his character and the monologue on stage was well received or not, it is indeed an experience that will be on my mind for a long time. Thank you again for this journey.  With admiration and gratitude.   Latha:  Kannan said the show was meticulously executed and impressive.  Kudos to you! And hearty congratulations!  Rani, please set aside all the worries and bad feelings and enjoy the glory of things that went right and made the show impressive. God’s blessings and everyone’s prayers made it possible. It’s TRUE for everyone that only 50% of what we expect comes out. If the 50% impressed everyone, be proud and happy about all the planning and hard work you put forth in all these months. It was a lot of imagination, planning, patience, coordination, and hard work that made this possible. Give yourself a pat on the back and a bear hug from me!  Be happy.. you pulled it off grandly.. big hug from me for that!  Kannan was simply flabbergasted
  2. Thambi (retd Educationalist from California; first to see a KNS show) Amazing evening. So proud of u. There was this one girl who did a solo in front of the Gandhi statue. She was stunning and danced so beautifully – just couldn’t take my eyes off her. I thought she was a little kid, didn’t think she would be in College, my apologies!
  3. Meena (Attu & Kalaaksharam Trustee)You can’t imagine how impressive the program was. Starting with the first item, which was stunning. The choreography, the music, everything was perfect. You are such a great dance teacher, and the girls are testament to that. …And you did such a great job MC-ing the program. I am so touched at how loyal you have been to my father
  4. Srimati Karuna (CEO Gandhi Memorial Center) Congratulations on the wonderful presentation of dance and exploration of the themes so integral to the life of Mahatma Gandhi. I commend you and all your students on their glorious presentation. I was privileged to be able to witness all the wonderful effort you put into a very special program.
  5. Balaji (vocalist)Dances are very nice and excellent choreography. Kannan is a good pick for Gandhi. He did a fabulous job.  [he was inquiring in detail about the ‘Life of Gandhi’ a merger of dance in front and silhouette acting at the back.]
  6. Johnson (Thamizh professor – Catholic Community) The show was excellent and the dramatic scene behind the curtain was a good idea and nice to watch each part of it. I was thrilled to see your family members and spoke to ur Brother (with the suit, I believe). The topic is a great one and I wish u all the very best on your future projects.
  7. Vinatha (journalist/dance critique) thematic production on Gandhiji’s Philosophy on ” Ahimsa ” was outstanding both in terms of an Aesthetic presentation as well as anexcellent Narration in the medium of combining Theater with classical dance form, Bharatanatyam. The dancers who came from different age groups joined together on stage to perform in harmony. The Backdrops on stage with images from Gandhiji’s eventful journey on the Path of Non Violence was an added attraction. The musical scores especially the Ones drawn from Great Poets like Subramanya Bharatiyar were enjoyed by the Tamil Speaking audience. There was never a dull moment from start to finish as the dancers kept the jam-packed audience spellbound with their riveting Solo and group dance sequences . We the audience particularly enjoyed the Appearance of Kannan Ramasamy as Mahatma Gandhi himself and conversing on stage with Kasturbha Gandhi. It was very realistic and transported us to the days of pre independence era where Gandjhiji held many such public conferences. All in all, Rani David is to be congratulated on a Wonderful Narration of Gandhiji’s Philosophy of Ahimsa via the medium of dance and theater. This dance drama was a glorious tribute to Rani’s 150 years of Service to the metro dc audience in the area of Classical dance. The melodious musical scores, the Aesthetic and colorful costumes along with skilled Dancers from Kalakshram contributed to the program’s enormous Success. The audience never stopped clapping ….. 8. Nalini (parent – journalist)
  9. Cynthia (medical field)
  10. Vatsala-Jaya (World Bank retirees) AMAZING, what a fabulous performance!!! The thoughts and details of each item reflecting the themes of Gandhiji was amazing. It was truly spectacular. Enjoyed it very much.
Broadway module. Enjoyed max. Thanks for the opportunity and privilege.
  11. Bindhu (student) this is for the whole world to see
  12. Manu (parent, Violinist who bought 9 sponsor tickets at $50 a piece) as usual this was yet another impressive show and all of us truly enjoyed it from start to finish. The theme itself was such a unique and novel idea, together with so much of creativity! My friends were very impressed and felt that it was not only very educative and meaningful, but the very idea of communicating Gandhian history/principles in art form was incredible. Additionally, the choreography was stellar and so ware the performances of the little and older Gandhi(s). Overall, your passion, hard work, and creativity was very apparent. Every detail had the RANI touch!
  13. Savita (student) What a great show! Really impressed with all the details big or small factored in to only enhance the show. This is a class act show…. worthy of repeating at the Kennedy center.
I am in awe of your vision and execution of it. Even the the brochure is meticulously done…
  14. Kamal (daughter of Padmasri Rajan Devadas; now involved in Jewish Community) I was so surprised by you asking me to come & receive the beautiful gift of Mahatma Gandhiji’s piece of art. You have honored so many people. You deserved to be honored. It was a great production of your your humble, talented, hard work. We all enjoyed every minute. We pray for your good health, happiness & all the success. Barry & I so appreciated your gift to us.
  15. Jemima (parent/adult dancer/dance-critique) Iron-lady!
  16. Anitha (accomplished dancer) It was a treat! Thanks for all ur hard work! It paid off.
  17. Rachel (Sishya) Hope you are feeling good after a great show!! I think the program far surpassed my expectations. I’m really happy with how it came out and I hope you are as well Aunty. Don’t sweat the small stuff   Probably the biggest compliment i heard regarding the program was how much people really enjoyed the story telling parts. Especially the Life History segment. With the acting and the jathis, even people who never have seen dance we’re able to connect the timeline. That’s a huge success!!
  18. Deepa (Sishya) Comments from so many people were said how they heard only my footwork and my expressions were amazing. I finally stood out to people instead of Rachel; people noticed Deepa Prem not as Rachel’s sister but as an amazing dancer and I’m proud of myself. After your brother and my appa said wonderful things about my dancing I’m very happy with myself
Thanks for the great show aunty! Appreciate the hard work you put into making it a good one for everyone
  19. Jessica (Shobana Workshop)It was a great program and we really enjoyed the show from beginning to the end. The theme, performance, music, stage setups, etc… and well organized program. Thank you Akka for putting together such a great program and you did an amazing job. With love & prayers, Sunny, Mareena & Jessica.
  20. Sindhu (Sishya) My family loved it and thought it was professionally done. They all kept saying “Wow, you guys worked so hard, can see it on stage”
  21.

HISTORY of KNS

KNS Inauguration

Kalairani Natya Saalai was incepted in 1983 at the  Hospital when Rani’s second child was born. She was adamant until then to teach her skills if it was going to be a girl. But Sumithrin came along as a cute ‘boy’ and Rani’s friend Evan made her promise to teach her daughter Sumihira. Right at the hospital Sumithrin’s father gave the name, and Sumihira’s father designed a letterhead.  The first dance for Ruth Bixby’s wedding was presented under the banner of KNS.

9th August 1987  Dr. M. E. Cherian, her college President, whom Rani reveres inaugurated the school officially. At age 15 when Rani went to college, it was this leader who recognized her ‘hidden’ talent and provided many opportunities to excel in her skill.  13th November 2016 Cherian Computer Center was started at the Kalaaksharam. www.kalaaksharam.com
